QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH OFFICER (focusing on questionnaire development) (Ref: VG-08-008)
Grade 7: Salary £27,466 - £33,780 p.a. (with effect 1 May 2008)
Young Lives is a long-term research project on childhood poverty core-funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID), to investigate the changing nature of childhood poverty in Ethiopia, India (Andhra Pradesh), Peru and Vietnam. The purpose of Young Lives is to improve understanding of the causes and consequences of childhood poverty, in order to inform effective policy development and targeting of child welfare interventions.
The research officer will be responsible for co-ordinating the development of questionnaires for the round three survey which is due to take place in the second half of 2009 and for contributing towards the validation of the round two questionnaires.
Applicants should have a doctorate in Economics or related social science discipline (or approaching completion), with strong skills relevant for quantitative child poverty research. They will need excellent analytical and statistical skills including STATA with recent experience working with surveys (preferably household surveys for developing countries. Excellent writing, communication and interpersonal skills are also required
Whilst the role is a grade 7 position, we would be willing to consider candidates with potential but less experience (e.g. a MPhil in Economics or related social science discipline) who are seeking a development opportunity, for which initial appointment would be at grade 6 (£24,403 - £29,138 p.a., with effect from 1 May 2008) with the responsibilities adjusted accordingly. This would be discussed with applicants at interview/appointment where appropriate.
The post is full time for one year (up to 30 June 2009 in first instance).
