Niños Del Milenio's Second Journalistic Competition on Children and Poverty [archived item. 2004]
Winners Announced
On January 13th 2004, Niños Del Milenio (as Young Lives is known in Peru) announced the winners of its second journalism competition “Children and Poverty in Peru”. The competition makes awards to journalists who contribute to information about children living in poverty in Peru. It has three categories: press, radio and television.
The panel in charge of evaluating the contestants’ work, composed
of the renowned journalist Guido Lombardi and Eliana Villar Márquez,
the National Co-ordinator of Niños Del Milenio in Peru, reached
a unanimous decision to award first prize for press articles
to Gastón Agurto, a journalist with Caretas magazine,
for his article entitled “Saga Piraña (Street Kid Saga)”, published
on October 2nd of last year. Second prize went to Luis Alarcón,
a journalist with the La Industria newspaper in the city
of Chiclayo, for his article on child domestic work “Manitas en
las escobas (Small Hands Sweeping)” published on December 7th. Journalist
Paola Ugaz was highly commended for her piece in the EFE news agency
entitled “Desnutrición mina el desarrollo escolar de zonas pobres
del Perú (Malnutrition undermines academic development in Peru’s
poor areas)”.
In the television journalism category, first prize went to journalist Mathias Brivio for his news report called “Lección maestra (Master Lesson)”, broadcast on the Cuarto Poder programme by the América Televisión channel on November 9th. Finally, in the radio broadcast category, first prize was won by Luis Lozada, a journalist with the Cutivalú Radio station in Piura, for his report entitled “Colegio Embarazoso (Pregnant Silence)”, broadcast on December 15th
