Research ethics in practice
A new page on the Young Lives website sets out the approach to research ethics that we are taking as a longitudinal study working with children and young people over 15 years. We take a positive view of research ethics as enabling high-quality research while maintaining positive relationships between our research teams and the children and families who participate in the study.
The issues are explored in more depth in a paper by Virginia Morrow: The Ethics of Social Research with Children and Families in Young Lives: Practical Experiences (Young Lives Working Paper 53).
The webpage also outlines some of the practical ways we approach ethical issues, through our Memorandum of Understanding for research teams; our approach to anonymity and confidentiality of the study children (including guidelines on use of photography); rewards and compensation for participation; reporting back to communities; and child protection.
