For the first time, a debate about child abuse and child protection policies has been encouraged by the president of Peru, Alan Garcia, himself. This could be an historic moment in Peru. However, it is disappointing that the discussion about enforcing the death penalty for individuals found guilty of child abuse has been seen either as a populist measure or as a way of preventing the government from addressing what some opinion leaders consider “top priority issues”. It suggests that children’s issues in Peru are still far from being recognized as a priority by a number of policy makers.
