Young Lives Data

Anonymised data for the Round 1 and Round 2 quantitative survey of Young Lives children and their households are publicly available through the Economic and Social Data Service (ESDS) - via the UK Public Data Archive (UKDA). The website gives access to data from Round 1 (2002) and Round 2 (2006) plus all the relevant documentation.

To access the data, follow study number 5307 (SN 5307) on the ESDS website:

SN 5307 - Young Lives: an International Study of Childhood Poverty: Rounds 1 and 2, 2002-2006

File format:
We have deposited SPSS data files - with one file with all the data at the household/child level plus other files for the sub-tables in the database/questionnaire (e.g. the household roster).  The household level file contains cleaned data plus the set of key composite variables that were used in the original tabulation plans, including the wealth index.

Documentation to accompany the archive:

Documentation accompanies the SPSS data files which describe how composite variables were derived.  This documentation set includes the questionnaires themselves as well as a “data dictionary” describing each variable and giving the code values where appropriate.  The description links the variable to the question on the questionnaire.  For calculated variables the description includes the method of calculation.

The description of the Young Lives data base (pdf file user guide and also webpage study information and citation) is located at:

The UK Data Archive (UKDA)  is an internationally renowned centre of expertise in data acquisition, preservation, dissemination and promotion; and is curator of the largest collection of digital data in the social sciences and humanities in the UK. The UKDA provides support for secondary use of quantitative and qualitative data in research, teaching and learning as a lead partner of the Economic and Social Data Servic (ESDS).  ESDS  is a national data service providing access and support for an extensive range of key economic and social data, both quantitative and qualitative, spanning many disciplines and themes. It comprises a number of specialist data services that promote and encourage data usage in teaching and research.  These include ESDS International and ESDS Longitudinal.
The Young Lives data are stored in the international section of the ESDS website. ESDS International provides access to, and support for, a range of international datasets - both macro and micro sources. The service aims to promote and facilitate increased and more effective use of international datasets in research, learning and teaching across a range of disciplines. It is run jointly by the Manchester Information and Associated Services (MIMAS) and UKDA.
