Measuring the Dynamics of Multiple Deprivations among Children

Researchers from the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) have recently been working with data from Young Lives to apply a multidimensional poverty measure to longitudinal data on children and their families. They use the Young Lives panel data to create an index and calculate changes in poverty levels and changes in the average numbers of deprivations experienced by Young Lives children. These are then further analysed to look at the probabilities of households moving into and out of poverty.

In 2010, the OPHI team worked closely with UNDP to introduce a Multidimensional Poverty Index into the UNDP Human Development Report. The index aims to show the number of people who are poor across a range of dimensions and the multiple deprivations they face at household level.

This work in progress will be presented in a seminar in the Economics Department at the University of Oxford on 25 May. It will be published by Young Lives in September.
