Preliminary Findings from Round 4 survey and school survey
15 January 2015 09:00
Addis Ababa

Preliminary findings from Rounds 1 to 4 of the Young Lives survey in 2013 and the school survey carried out during the 2012-13 school year will be launched at a special event in Addis Ababa on 15 January 2015.

Following the Round 4 household and child survey carried out in all four study countries in late 2013, we now have data on the Younger Cohort of children from infancy through to middle childhood, and the Older Cohort of children from age 8 until early adulthood. We are publishing preliminary findings from the survey in a series of short fact sheets - focusing on Education and Learning; Nutrition and Health; and Youth and Development. These fact sheets aim to give a brief overview of children's outcomes at age 12 and age 19 looking at differences by poverty level, rural/urban location and gender.

At the same time, we will also present preliminary findings from the school survey carried out in the academic year 2012-13. The survey covered nearly 12,000 pupils studying in Grades 4 and 5 in 30 sites located across seven regions of Ethiopia. The data generated offer a unique perspective on regional and site differences in pupil, teacher and school characteristics and the factors influencing pupil progression and learning in mathematics and reading comprehension over the course of a single school year. The presentation will provide an overview of the baseline descriptive report of the data, suggesting areas of potential interest to policymakers and areas for more detailed further research.

The combination of household, child and school-level data provides a powerful tool for analysis of child outcomes in Ethiopia and how circumstances for children are changing over time.
