Young Lives Senior Researcher Alan Sánchez was recently invited by UNICEF Peru to speak at the 13th Week of Inclusion, hosted by Peru’s Ministry of Development and Social Inclusion (MIDIS).
The 'Week of Inclusion' is an annual event organised by MIDIS to reflect on the achievements and challenges of Peru’s social programmes, including JUNTOS, the conditional cash transfer programme, and Cuna Más, which focuses on improving the cognitive, physical and social development of children under 3-years-of-age living in poverty.
Alan delivered a keynote presentation during the session 'What Works to Reduce Child Poverty', jointly organised by MIDIS and UNICEF Peru. Drawing on findings from the recent Young Lives 'Peru case study', his presentation explored what has worked to reduce childhood poverty in Peru over the past two decades. He discussed evidence on the impact of several public policies in reducing multidimensional poverty, highlighting both key successes and ongoing challenges. This was followed by comments from Orfelina Arpasi Quispe, Director of JUNTOS, Vanesa Toribio Vargas, Director of Cuna Mas and Roberto Rivero, UNICEF Social Policy Specialist.
The case study, developed by Alan, Kath Ford (Young Lives Deputy Director) and Santiago Cueto (Country Director, Niños del Milenio (Young Lives Peru)) using Young Lives' evidence, is summarised in the Global Coalition to End Child Poverty's publication What works to reduce child poverty: Insights from across the globe. The report was led and authored by Charlotte Bilo, Solrun Engilbertsdottir and Enrique Delamónica (UNICEF) and Oliver Fiala (Save the Children).
