Poverty and Gender Inequalities: Evidence from Young Lives

Tackling gender inequalities has become central to poverty reduction strategies, including the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). However, gender dynamics between children growing up in poverty, and how these change over time, are poorly understood, yet a number of assumptions prevail. Young Lives is a study of childhood poverty which is following two cohorts of children over 15 years in Ethiopia, India (Andhra Pradesh), Peru and Vietnam.

As a study of poverty during childhood, Young Lives focuses on children and their experiences of poverty in order to extend understanding of this critical period of the life course. Children's well-being and life chances are, however, interdependent with those of their parents and carers and the communities in which they reside, so Young Lives also considers household and community circumstances as central to child well-being.

Growth, Wealth and Inequality: Evidence from Young Lives

In many developing countries economic growth continues apace. National aspirations around sustained high levels of GDP increase do not seem to have been dented long term by a global economic crisis which looks set to depress growth rates in OECD countries for years to come. This paper uses exploratory analysis to consider how this economic growth is affecting the experiences of Young Lives children in Ethiopia, India (the state of Andhra Pradesh), Peru and Vietnam.

This report draws together data from the Young Lives survey and in-depth interviews to analyse gendered differences between boys and girls, focusing on three key areas: education and aspirations, domestic life and intra-household dynamics, and subjective well-being. It is important to bear in mind, however, that Young Lives is a study of childhood poverty and so does not capture all aspects of children's experiences. What this paper presents, therefore, is a gender analysis of a poverty study, rather than a gender study.

This survey report presents initial findings from the third round of data collection by Young Lives in Vietnam, carried out from late 2009 to early 2010. It gives a broad outline of some of the key indicators of childhood poverty and changes that have taken place in the children’s lives between the first round and second rounds of data collection in 2002 and 2006 and this third round. Data are mainly presented for the entire age cohort, in most cases separated into gender, wealth groups, rural/urban location and ethnicity.
