The evolution of young people’s mental health during COVID-19 and the role of food insecurity: Evidence from a four low-and-middle-income-country cohort study

The authors use data from 2 calls in Young Lives 2020 phone survey, to investigate how young people’s mental health evolved in India, Peru, Vietnam, Ethiopia over the course of the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The relationship between access to pre-school education and the development of social-emotional competencies: Longitudinal evidence from Peru

This article, published in the International Journal of Educational Development, provides evidence of the role pre-school plays in the development of social-emotional competencies. The authors used data from the Young Lives longitudinal study in Peru to test the relationship between attendance to pre-school education with agency and pride at ages 8, 12, and 15, and self-efficacy and self-esteem at ages 12 and 15. They found that attendance to pre-school is related to higher socio-emotional ability, specifically higher scores on indicators of agency and pride.

The origins of cognitive skills and non-cognitive skills: The long-term effect of in-utero rainfall shocks in India

Skills are an important predictor of labour, education, and wellbeing outcomes. Understanding the origins of skills formation is important for reducing future inequalities.

This paper, published in Economics and Human Biology, analyses the effect of shocks in-utero on human capital outcomes in childhood and adolescence in India. By combining historical rainfall data and longitudinal data from Young Lives, the authors estimate the effect of rainfall shocks in-utero on cognitive and non-cognitive skills development over the first 15 years of life.

Peruvian households have experienced one of the worst economic shocks due to COVID-19, significantly increasing their vulnerability to food insecurity.

This article, first published in the journal Nutrients (Volume 13, Issue 10) in 2021, uses Young Lives longitudinal data (n = 2026), to understand what makes young people in these households vulnerable, including the role of the government's response through emergency cash transfers.

Unpacking the Post-lockdown Employment Recovery of Young Women in the Global South

This paper, published in the IZA Institute of Labor Economics Discussion Paper Series, analyses the difference in short-term employment recovery between young men and women in India, Peru and Vietnam following the national lockdowns imposed in all three countries during 2020. 

The authors used a mediation model to establish whether - and to what extent - commonly suggested mechanisms are responsible for relatively slower recovery among young women and an increase in the gender employment gap.
