How Do Children Fare in the New Millennium?

This survey report presents initial findings from the third round of data collection by Young Lives in Vietnam, carried out from late 2009 to early 2010. It gives a broad outline of some of the key indicators of childhood poverty and changes that have taken place in the children’s lives between the first round and second rounds of data collection in 2002 and 2006 and this third round. Data are mainly presented for the entire age cohort, in most cases separated into gender, wealth groups, rural/urban location and ethnicity.

An Analysis of the Juntos Cash Transfer Programme in Peru

This paper studies the impact of a large-scale conditional cash-transfer programme (Juntos) in Peru. Given that the programme was implemented in 2005, there are only a few existing evaluations of the programme. Using the Young Lives dataset, we analyse the targeting efficiency of the programme, as well as its impact across a range of indicators reflecting child well-being. We find that the targeting mechanism seems to be working as intended, with poorer households getting preference. Also, the programme seems to have a significant impact on reducing the incidence of child labour.

The Impact of Child Labour on Educational Attainment

This study investigates the impact of child labour on educational attainment over a three-year horizon. Whilst this question has been explored by a plethora of studies in the literature, research focusing on the impact on school performance in developing economies is scarce. Employing a newly available dataset from the Young Lives survey and an instrumental variables strategy, this study examines the impact of working at age 12 on mathematics test scores three years later for children in Vietnam. In rural areas the evidence is suggestive that the impact of child labour is negligible.

Armed Conflict and Early Language and Cognitive Development in Ethiopia and Peru

Experts unanimously agree that armed conflict is harmful to children. However, few studies exist that examine the link between armed conflict and language and cognitive development in the early years. This paper uses the Young Lives data from Perú and Ethiopia to analyze the relationship between armed conflict and early language and cognitive development using two standardized measures, the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT) and the Cognitive Development Assessment-Quantitative (CDA-Q), both administered at or near age 5.

Early Nutrition and Cognition in Peru: A Within‐Sibling Investigation

This paper examines the causal link between early childhood nutrition and cognition, applying instrumental variables to sibling-differences for a sample of pre-school aged Peruvian children. Child-specific shocks in the form of food price changes and household shocks during the critical developmental period of a child are used as instruments. The analysis shows significant and positive returns to early childhood nutritional investments.

Eliminating Inter-Ethnic Inequalities?

Based on the Young Lives survey in 2006 and a qualitative research on 23 Kinh (the majority), Hmong and H'Roi children from the Young Lives sample in Lao Cai and Phu Yen provinces in 2008, this paper discusses the mixed impact of the implementation of education policies aimed at ethnic minorities in Vietnam. The paper finds that, despite a conspicuous expansion in access to basic education for ethnic minority students, the majority-minority gap in educational achievement persists.

Negotiating Children's Ethnic Identity in the Highlands of Vietnam

Based on data gathered during a Young Lives research in the highlands of Vietnam, this paper examines children's perceptions of similarities and differences between themselves and children from other ethnic groups, and the meanings they give to belonging to an ethnic group. Taking advantage of an approach that combines discursive analysis and the anthropological concept of agency, the paper highlights the cultural construction of children?s identities as well as children's critical capacities.
