An Employment Guarantee as Risk Insurance?

This paper assesses inhowfar employment guarantees can support households in managing agricultural production risks. Using representative panel data for Andhra Pradesh, India, it analyzes the effects of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) on households' crop choices. This paper shows that the introduction of the NREGS reduces households' uncertainty about future income streams because it provides reliable employment opportunities in rural areas independently of weather shocks and crop failure.

Tracking the Children of the Millennium

The global commitments made at the turn of the Millennium – to end poverty and hunger, improve access to clean water, sanitation and basic health care, and to expand primary school enrolment – were intended to transform the lives of children. Longitudinal studies that have tracked the lives of children over this period, have lessons to share as the world embarks on new commitments to an ambitious sustainable development agenda.

Intersections of School, Work, and Learning: Children in Ethiopia, India, Peru, and Vietnam

This chapter synthesises recent research from Young Lives, a longitudinal study of children growing up in poverty in four countries, Ethiopia, India, Peru and Vietnam. The chapter focuses on spatial and temporal aspects of learning and working. Using case studies from qualitative research as well as survey data, it describes first the extent and forms of work children undertake and how these change over time, second, how poverty influences children’s work activities, and  third, what skills children learn through work.

Human Capital Development and Parental Investment in India

In this paper we estimate production functions for cognition and health throughout four stages of childhood from 5-15 years of age using two cohorts of children drawn from the Young Lives Survey for India. The inputs into the production function include parental background, prior child cognition and health and child investments. We allow investments to be endogenous and they depend on local prices and household income, as well as on the exogenous determinants of cognition and health.
