School environments and obesity: a systematic review of interventions and policies among school-age students in Latin America and the Caribbean

The rapid rise in obesity rates among school children in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) could have a direct impact on the region’s physical and mental health, disability, and mortality.

This review presents the available interventions likely to reduce, mitigate and/or prevent obesity among school children in LAC by modifying the food and built environments within and around schools.

Exploring Reasons for Low Female Labour Force Participation in Regular Salaried Jobs: Evidence from Young Lives longitudinal study in India

Gender inequality in employment remains high in India with women’s work participation rate at 22% compared to 54% for males.

Drawing upon evidence from Young Lives panel data, this article explores factors affecting labour force participation and gender inequity, especially with reference to regular salaried jobs amongst young adults at age 22.

Young women are 59% less likely to be in regular salaried jobs compared to their male counterparts with  marital status alone contributing to more than 98% of the gender gap in regular salaried employment.

Improving Sexual and Reproductive Health in Ethiopia: Young Lives Evidence Shows Inequalities Continue to Disadvantage Adolescent Girls and Young Women

Ethiopia has made significant improvements in sexual and reproductive health (SRH) over the past two decades through key policy initiatives and strategic objectives in support of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

Despite these positive trends, inequalities and entrenched patriarchal norms continue to disadvantage adolescent girls and young women, particularly those from poor  households and in rural areas.

“A dream come true”? Adolescents’ perspectives on urban relocation and life in condominiums in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

From 2006, the Ethiopian government embarked on a programme of urban redevelopment, moving people from inner-city areas to lowest cost condominium housing in the suburbs.

This journal article uses data from a longitudinal mixed-methods study that tracked adolescents before and after the move, with an eight-year interval in between, in three Young Lives sites in the capital city, Addis Ababa. It compares the views of those relocated and those who stayed behind, and the opinions of those relocated before and after their move.

This report summarises key findings from 27 Young Lives publications on sexual and reproductive health (SRH) across five themes: female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C); marriage and cohabitation; contraception knowledge and use; pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting; and SRH services. It also presents new survey and qualitative analysis focusing on inequalities based on gender, generation, age and cohorts, family composition, household circumstances, personal characteristics, marital status and residence.
