Do More School Resources Increase Learning Outcomes? Evidence from an Extended School-Day Reform

Whether allocating more resources improves learning outcomes for students in low-performing public schools remains an open debate.

We focus on the effect of increased instructional time, which is theoretically ambiguous due to possible compensating changes in effort by students, teachers or parents.

Using a regression discontinuity approach, we find that a reform extending the school day increases math test scores, with a large effect size relative to other interventions. It also improved reading, technical skills and socio-emotional competencies.

Are young internal migrants ‘favourably’ selected? Evidence from four developing countries

Young people are more likely to migrate than older people. During the transition to adulthood, they make important choices regarding education, labour force participation, and family formation.

Using a unique panel dataset on youth born in 1994–95 in Ethiopia, India, Peru, and Vietnam, this paper investigates whether young migrants are ‘positively’ self-selected in observable characteristics, specifically on educational attainment.

School environments and obesity: a systematic review of interventions and policies among school-age students in Latin America and the Caribbean

The rapid rise in obesity rates among school children in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) could have a direct impact on the region’s physical and mental health, disability, and mortality.

This review presents the available interventions likely to reduce, mitigate and/or prevent obesity among school children in LAC by modifying the food and built environments within and around schools.
