Social Capital and Education Outcomes in Urban and Rural Peru (Spanish)

Alhough enrolment in primary schools in Peru is very high, more than half of primary school children are one or more grades below the norm for their age. Evaluations show Peruvian school children score well below the global average for their age and the average of countries with similar socio-economic circumstances. The role of social capital, or social networks and support, trust, and reciprocity, in explaining these findings has not been studied. Research in the United States has suggested positive associations between social capital and educational achievement.

The Ethics of Research Reciprocity: Making Children’s Voices Heard in Poverty Reducation Policy-Making in Vietnam

Increasingly, academics and researchers working on poverty issues recognise that poor people's own experiences and opinions should be heard. However, it is not just a question of encouraging participation. More attention needs to be paid to the ethics of research reciprocity –ensuring that participating communities are part of the research process and help shape the findings and recommendations that flow from it.

Child Learning in Andhra Pradesh: The Interplay Between School and Home

India has made remarkable progress over the past 50 years in improving rates of adult literacy and school enrolment for boys and girls. However, there are concerns about drop-out rates and the quality of education, especially in government schools. It is important to appreciate that children learn both within and outside the classroom. There is a need to understand the extent to which basic numeracy and literacy skills are influenced by the home environment.

Child Nutritional Status in Poor Ethiopian Households

Ethiopia is one the world's poorest countries with one of the highest rates of child malnutrition. The poor nutritional status of Ethiopian children is well documented, but the causes and relative importance of various determinants of malnutrition are not well understood. Ethiopia thus lacks an integrated cross-sectoral policy to guide nutrition programmes and interventions. While the literature on child malnutrition suggests gender- and location-related differences in malnutrition rates, this has not been investigated in detail, particularly in Ethiopia.

Adult Education and Child Nutrition in India and Vietnam: The Role of Family, Neighbours and Friends

It is well established that mothers' education has positive effects on child nutrition in developing countries. In school, girls can acquire skills which are later used to access modern health services and comprehend health messages. Less explored, however, is the effect exerted by the education of other individuals —the mothers' friends, neighbours and family — which may influence child nutrition directly or modify the effect of maternal education.
