Does early nutrition predict cognitive skills during later childhood? Evidence from two developing countries

The majority of existing evidence linking early undernutrition to educational outcomes in developing countries focuses largely on its impacts on grade attainment and achievement test scores, with limited evidence on the foundational cognitive skills required to perform well at school. In this article, the authors use Young Lives data and investigate the relationship between early undernutrition and four foundational cognitive skills, to shed light on the mechanisms that explain the relationship between early nutrition and school achievement tests.

Reprioritising inclusion and equity to meet SDG4: Action is needed beyond the education sector – and must begin before school entry

With reference to the body of multidisciplinary research produced using the Young Lives dataset, author Professor Cath Porter argues that longitudinal evidence using a life-course perspective can inform policy to address educational inequalities and meet SDG4. Inequality of opportunity in education had been falling over the 20 years since the Millennium, but progress has been reversed by recent global crises.   Investment in education systems is necessary but is not sufficient to reach SDG4.

Human Capital Development: New Evidence on the Production of Socio-Emotional Skills

The authors use Young Lives data about Peruvians aged 8-22, part of the study’s older cohort born in 1994, to estimate a dynamic model of socio-emotional skill development. They show that inequalities begin to emerge by age 12 and widen through to age 19, driven by differential household investments and cross-productivity with cognitive skills.
