Should Parents Work Away from or Close to Home?

Working away from home might bring higher earnings than working near home. However, the absence of parents due to work can have unexpected effects on children. This paper examines the effects of the temporary absence of parents on the well-being of children aged between 5 and 8 years old in Vietnam, using indicators of  household poverty, per capita consumption expenditure, and children's time allocation. The paper relies on OLS and fixed effects regression and panel data from the  Young Lives surveys in 2007 and 2009.

Teacher Training and Development in Ethiopia: Improving Education Quality by Developing Teacher Skills, Attitudes and Work Conditions

Research evidence shows that various kinds of teacher training, capacity building and work experience have positive effects on education quality. Having well-trained and experienced teachers in schools is just as important as good education materials and good relationships between teachers and communities. However, children in rural Ethiopia face shortages of well-trained, experienced and motivated teachers.

Why Children in Vietnam Drop out of School and What They Do After That

This paper uses data on 3,000 children in Vietnam, as well as on their siblings, to investigate the problem of children dropping out of school early or leaving straight after lower secondary education. Both quantitative and qualitative approaches are employed. We find that poor performance in class is the biggest predictor of children leaving school early. Household poverty and parental education are also important factors behind the probability of this phenomenon.

A Study of the Determinants of Risk Aversion in Andhra Pradesh, India

Economic literature has established the importance of risk attitudes in economic decision making. The study examines determinants of risk aversion in children. It also explores the potential of the government to mitigate the effect of shocks, by looking at the effectiveness of the world's largest public works program — the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS).

Decomposing Multidimensional Poverty Dynamics

A growing interest in multidimensional poverty measures among academics and policymakers has been patent in recent years. Yet the literature has focused on cross-sectional evidence. This paper proposes a novel decomposition of changes in multidimensional poverty, as measured by the basic members of the Alkire-Foster family of measures. The method works for any type of dataset; and, in the case of panel datasets, it is useful for relating changes in these Alkire-Foster measures to transitions into and out of multidimensional poverty.

The Impact of Public Expenditure on Child Malnutrition in Peru

Why is the urban-rural gap in child malnutrition increasing in Peru despite government efforts to improve the provision of public services? To answer this question, the impact of regional public expenditure in Peru on young children's nutritional outcomes is examined. To account for policy endogeneity, public expenditures are instrumented using unanticipated regional mining revenues. Even after accounting for changes in expenditure composition due to increases in mining revenues, public spending has a significant and positive impact on children's outcomes only in urban areas.

Living in Urban Areas due for Redevelopment

This report is the first of three resulting from a sub-study conducted by Young Lives in four communities in Ethiopia, three in Addis Ababa and one in Hawassa, to examine what happens to children and their families living in areas that are due to be redeveloped. The paper presents the views of children and their caregivers about their living conditions prior to the impending move. It considers how children and adults view their home and neighbourhood environment and the extent of their social support networks.
