Rural–Urban Child Height for Age Trajectories and Their Heterogeneous Determinants in Four Developing Countries

The large literature on health differentials between rural and urban areas relies almost exclusively on cross-sectional data. Bringing together the demographic literature on area-level health inequalities with the bio-physiological literature on children’s catch-up growth over time, this paper uses panel data to investigate the stability and origins of rural–urban health differentials.

Does access to sanitation and drinking water facilities relate to students’ learning outcomes? Evidence from Andhra Pradesh, India

Indian students fall substantially behind students from other countries in academic performance. A majority of students in India also do not have access to usable toilets and drinking water facilities. Some literature suggests that access to sanitation and
drinking water facilities is related to education outcomes, such as school enrollment rates, school attendance rates, and students’ cognitive functions.

Learning Outcomes of Children Aged 12 in Ethiopia: A Comparison of Two Cohorts

This paper examines inequality of learning outcomes among children of the same age (age 12) but seven years apart – in 2006 and 2013. It employs statistical analysis and uses data from the Young Lives Older Cohort who were aged 12 in 2006 (Round 2 of the Young Lives survey) and the Younger Cohort who were aged 12 in 2013 (Round 4), focusing on the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT), mathematics and common reading test results.
