This working paper examines how gender affects girls’ and boys’ school, work and marriage trajectories across adolescence and into early adulthood in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in India. It explores when gender inequality begins to open up in childhood; in which domains, how and why gender disparities persist across adolescence and into early adulthood; and, finally, whether and how gendered norms, values and practices impact on children’s trajectories.

Psychosocial Competencies and Risky Behaviours in Peru

There is a growing concern about the prevalence of risky behaviours among young people, which ultimately lead to worse outcomes later in life, including lower salaries and worse socio-economic and life outcomes. On the other hand, there is little evidence about the prevalence of these behaviours and their determinants in the context of developing countries.

Impact of the Juntos Conditional Cash Transfer Programme in Peru on Nutritional and Cognitive Outcomes: Does the Age of Exposure Matter?

Juntos is a large-scale conditional cash transfer (CCT) programme implemented in Peru since 2005. This programme transfers the equivalent of about US$30 monthly (around 10 per cent of monthly consumption) to poor families located, mainly, in the rural highlands, on condition that all children under the age of 5 are subject to growth monitoring controls, all children and adolescents attend school, and all pregnant women attend regular check-ups, among other aspects (conditions have evolved over time).

Bilingual education in Peru: Evidence on how Quechua-medium Education Affects Indigenous Children's Academic Achievement

This study uses school-level data from Young Lives in Peru to investigate the effect of Quechua-medium instruction on academic achievement. We find that Indigenous children who attend Quechua-medium schools achieve 0.429 standard deviations higher scores in mathematics compared to Indigenous children who attend Spanish-medium schools. There is no evidence that these effects are caused by quantitative or language achievement acquired prior to entering school.
