Maternal Undernutrition and Childbearing in Adolescence and Offspring Growth and Development: Is Adolescence a Critical Window for Interventions Against Stunting?

Maternal undernutrition and adolescent childbearing are prevalent in low- and middle-income countries and have harmful consequences for children. However, less is known on whether these implications persist throughout the offspring’s life course. Moreover, although adult nutritional status has been suggested to largely reflect conditions during the period from conception to 2 years old (“the first 1,000 days”), others have argued that adolescence is an equally important period for nutrition.

Parental Background and Child Human Capital Development Throughout Childhood and Adolescence

Although there is a vast number of empirical studies documenting a strong positive link between parental socioeconomic status (SES) and child outcomes, we do not know whether these associations remain robust when controlling for other parental background dimensions. In this working paper, Andreas Georgiadis investigates the association of child human capital indicators with a wide range of parental background dimensions across four low- and middle-income countries (Ethiopia, India, Peru and Vietnam) and at different stages of childhood and adolescence using data from Young Lives.

Psychosocial competencies and risky behaviours in Peru

In this paper, the authors use the Young Lives longitudinal dataset from Peru to investigate the relationship between psychosocial competencies related to the concepts of self-esteem, self-efficacy, and aspirations, and a number of risky behaviours at a crucial transition period between adolescence and early adulthood.

Early rapid weight gain and subsequent overweight and obesity in middle childhood in Peru

Rapid postnatal weight gain is associated with risk of overweight and obesity, but it’s unclear whether this holds in populations exposed to concurrent obesogenic risk factors and for children who have been extensively breastfed. This study investigates whether an increase in weight for age from birth to 1 year (infancy) and from 1 to 5 years (early childhood) predicts overweight and obesity, and waist circumference at 8 years, using data from a longitudinal cohort study in Peru.

Multidimensional Child Poverty: Including Children’s Perspectives

Vietnam has achieved impressive poverty reduction, with the poverty rate falling from 58 per cent in the early 1990s to less than 10 per cent by 2010 (World Bank 2012). However, the poverty line used by government to calculate poverty rates is based on an income definition which has a number of limitations, primarily that it does not count everything that affects the quality of people’s lives, especially access to services. Without access to basic services, households just above the poverty line are more likely to fall back into poverty.
