Leaving no one behind in a growing Vietnam: The story from Young Lives

The Young Lives Vietnam Country Report presents results from our fifteen-year longitudinal study, which followed two cohorts of children in various situations from remote rural and mountainous sites to urban sites, as a component of a larger multi-country project. The study relates conditions early in the lives of children to later outcomes, and so improves understanding of the effects of poverty on children’s life trajectories.

Psychosocial Scales in the Young Lives Round 4 Survey: Selection, Adaptation and Validation

The importance of positive psychosocial functioning for children’s current wellbeing and for their future outcomes is recognised across a range of disciplines, yet research on the psychosocial development of individuals in developing countries is in its infancy.

Young Lives has contributed to closing this knowledge gap through extensive data collection on a range of measures of psychosocial skill domains, administered in schools and households in developing countries, where large-scale survey data that include measures of psychosocial constructs are rare.

This article in the Review of Development Economics, presents the results of a quantitative analysis that measured the relationship between psychosocial status at the age of 8, and the development of cognitive skills four years later. The data were taken from 700 Peruvian children who completed the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test and the Raven's Progressive Matrices. These two tests provided scores for cognitive skill achievement.
